Patara Gallery — contemporary art in Tbilisi underpass

что привезти из Грузии, социальный проект в Тбилиси, стартап
A few months ago, two girls, Gvantsa and Natalie, opened a small gallery in one of the underground passages of Tbilisi. The gallery is located in one of the store pavilions and attracts the attention of working neighbours.
PataraGallery is...
Patara Gallery – is one of my and Gvantsa's projects. It's a very small gallery space in a very ugly underpass in the center of Tbilisi. Our gallery is mostly for young and emerging artists from Georgia and around the world. Just after our first show, we announced an open call and received quite a lot of proposals. So, for now, almost the whole year of the gallery is planned… and we also will take part in Tbilisi Triennial and Tbilisi Art Fair.

The idea of this project occurred to us...
One day Gvantsa was just passing by that underpass and saw that space, so she asked me what if we make a very small gallery space there, I liked that idea and so it began.

Our Patara Gallery neighbours...
we don't have neighbors actually yet, just two ladies at the beginning and the end of the underpass and we are not in a very good relationship with them. Since it is a contemporary art gallery and from time to time there are exhibition they just don't understand, so they are always asking questions: "What is that? What does that mean, and why do you make it?" Sometimes they are even being aggressive towards us, trying to insult us, but we don't take it seriously and just keep doing our thing.

3 things that we had to give up for the sake of the project...
So far, we somehow manage to run the gallery along with our jobs and other stuff. Of course, sometime there are very tough periods as preparing for the opening and some of our deadlines coincide, but with our double power me manage to do it all and even Patara's instagram page.

The craziest story with PataraGallery happened...
Once we went to our gallery before we finally moved in and found that a church shop was opened there with candles, crosses, icons and a seller inside there.

We didn't suffer so much as...
… Fighting with people in the underpass all the time! As it was and still it is very hard to make them understand why do we run the space without having any income and what is that we make there. Those contemporary installations seem to be very hard to understand.

The most unexpected reaction to PataraGallery...
After our first show at the gallery, one of the ladies working in the underpass told us that we are Satanists and demons.

My grandmother...
Gvantsa: She's strict and loves to sing on a low voice while looking out the window.
Natalie: I wish I've met her... She was a very strong person and had a very tough and interesting life. She was survivor of Leningrad Siege together with my father.

For work, we need...
Eachother.

Georgia gives us...
Inspiration in many ways.

Four of our most successful works...
Until now we only had 4 shows and all of them are like rare diamonds and very special so all of them are successful in a way.

More than anything else...
For now, we love imagining what we would do in a gallery if it was our show.

Art must...
has to be accepted and accessible.

We are upset by...
stupid and aggressive people.

Dreaming...
as recently we have loads of work to do we are dreaming of traveling! And we would love to make David Shrigley's show one day.

I want to learn...
Gvantsa: Swimming
Natalie: Spanish
